Chinese Astrology · BaZi
Your Favorable & Unfavorable Elements
Once your chart is built, the real question in BaZi is simple: which of the five elements help you, and which hinder you? The helpful ones are your favorable elements (喜神), led by the single most useful one — the Useful God (用神). The unhelpful ones are your unfavorable elements (忌神).
It starts with Day Master strength
Your Day Master can be strong (well-supported by same-element and resource energies) or weak (drained by output, wealth and pressure), with many charts sitting balanced in between. The month of birth (月令) weighs heaviest in deciding this.
Strong wants to drain, weak wants support
If your Day Master is too strong, you have energy to spare — so the elements that express, spend or channel it (output, wealth and authority) become favorable, while more support only tips you off balance. If your Day Master is too weak, it's the opposite: the elements that feed and reinforceyou (resource and allies) are favorable, and draining ones are best avoided. A balanced chart simply wants whatever it's missing.
Why the same day isn't lucky for everyone
This is the key to real BaZi: a day, month or year carries its own elements, and whether it's lucky for youdepends on whether it brings your favorable elements or your unfavorable ones. That's why one person's brilliant day is another's hard one — and exactly how DayMaster scores your daily 運 (luck) reading: it works out your favorable elements, then reads each day against them.
(We use a simplified strength-and-balance method — authentic enough to be meaningful, while a master would also weigh hidden stems, combinations and seasonal climate.)
